Lesson 8

Man Part 1

Man

Suppose you are in a “Long Jump” challenge. A goal line has been set. Everyone in the challenge tries their best to reach the goal. During the competition everyone falls short of the goal line. Do you think that if you had a bigger running start, you would be able to reach the mark? What about if you practiced more? Do you think you would have reached the mark then? Even with a bigger running start and more time to practice, you still would not have reached the mark. The goal line was simply impossible to reach. The goal line is like God’s standard of perfection. That is a high standard! It represents living a perfect life and being a perfect person. It is obvious that we all fall short of the perfection line.

What Standard do you think God Holds Us To?

“But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48  Wow, what a high standard! We can’t measure up to God’s standard of perfection any better than we could jump and reach that perfection line in a long jump. It’s simply impossible. No matter how good we try to be, we cannot be perfect. Only God is perfect. The reason we can’t measure up to God’s standard of perfection is because of sin. Are you a sinner? Every single person is! Not one of us has gone a day without sinning. The Bible tells us this is so. “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” Romans 3:23

What is Sin?

If sin is what keeps us from meeting God’s standard for getting into heaven, it's important that we understand what sin is and where it came from. Sin is anything we think, say, do, or don’t do, that displeases God. Sin includes behaviors such as lying, stealing, cheating, being proud, being jealous, and disobeying our parents. The Bible tells us that NOT doing the things we should do is also a sin. Like; NOT helping people, NOT reading your Bible, NOT praying, NOT trusting, and NOT loving God all the time. Where did sin come from? Read Romans5:18-19

Through Adam we all became sinners. When Adam ate from the forbidden fruit in the Garden, he brought sin into the world. When Adam and Eve sinned, God promised them a Savior who would come to pay the penalty for their sins. That Savior is Jesus, who lived a perfect life and who died on the cross to pay for our sin sand to purchase a place for us in heaven. Do you see why it is impossible to get to heaven on your own? It is impossible for you to save yourself. Will you accept Jesus into your heart today?
